3 Ways to Add Farmhouse Character to Your Home

Table vignette with collected vintage finds

The simple life on the farm was everything to me. Nothing was more relaxing after a long plane flight than to reach the winding driveway that led up to my house. The quiet of the night was more soothing than a sleeping pill.

Farmhouse living can be a state of mind and there are many ways to add farmhouse character to your home. Here are our top three ways to do it:

  1. Pick a color scheme and stay consistent. This will act as the backdrop to your decorating and provide the "glue" to keep a cohesive look and feel throughout your home, room by room. The farmhouse style typically includes a lot of neutral colors but don't be afraid to make it your own.

2. Try not to match everything. It's tempting to get all of your decorating done at once by shopping at a "rooms on the go" store. But pieces that don't match and are collected over time add warmth and personality to any space. Think outside the box and come up with different and unexpected ways to use a piece, for example, using a galvanized bucket to hold magazines.

3. Use both old and new pieces!  A collected look with both new and well worn/old (or made to look old) pieces adds a rich, eclectic, farmhouse vibe to your rooms. Your guests won't be afraid to touch anything and will feel more comfortable, too.

Bonus tip: Just have fun and stay true to yourself. Usually, if you like a piece you can make it work! (Sign up for our newsletter below to receive more decorating tips and ideas each month! )
